Bat Houses For Sale

There are many places online where one can find Bat Houses for sale,  But before one thinks of buying one, however, several factors should be taken into consideration.  Finding a suitible area and location, the design and size of the house and the average temperature for your area are all critical factors that can affect your bat population.

Bat House Location

A bat is a mammal and like all mammals it needs food shelter and water.  Areas with an abundant water supply would be ideal for bats.  Not only do these areas provide the water they need but it supplies them with all the insects they need to survive.  As for location, it would be best to place Bat Houses on tall poles as far away from tree limbs as possible.  If attachinging the house to a building, place them about 10 to 20 feet off the ground and position spacers between the Bat House and the buiding wall to prevent damage from bat urine and feeces.  It would be a good idea to place a shallow pan below the Bat House to catch the waste material.

Bat House Design

01002Bat Houses come in a variety of shapes and sizes.  There are decorative ones for placing by a home or in a garden and there are practicle ones referred to as boxes.  Individual Bat Houses are made up of chambers.  A single chambered house can occupy about fifty bats.  While a multi chambered house can hold 200 or more.

& Temperature

The internal temperature of a Bat House should always be between 80 and 100 degrees Farenheit.  The amount of sunlight hitting the house and the construction materials used and the color the house is painted are the determining factors for temperature control.

  • Average temperature less than 85° F - paint the outside black.
  • Average temperatures between 85° F and 95° F - paint the outside brown.
  • Average temperatures between 95° F and 100° F - paint with medium colors.
  • Average temperatures are above 100° F - paint with white or light colors.

Bats do not like cold weather.  When temperatures start to drop some bats will find places like caves or abandoned buildings to hiberbate.  While others will migrate to warmer climates.   Some species have been known to travel over a thousand miles.
